United Way of the Flint Hills is seeking an Executive Director to oversee the administration, programs, fundraising, and community outreach of the organization.


United Way of the Flint is a 501(c) 3 organization whose mission is to build a vibrant community by focusing on education, income and health. Established in 1938, the United Way has a long history of supporting a variety of local organizations and creating its own programs and initiatives to address issues facing communities. United Way takes seriously its role to be a thought leader in the community and has established partnerships and relationships with a variety of nonprofit organizations, businesses, and associations to improve the quality of life for our residents. The following list of major duties is performed by the Executive Director and is not inclusive.


Fundraising and Community OutreachRepresent the organization in key community events, meetings, and activities.


Ensure the organization’s community outreach prioritizes education, health and financial stability.
Lead community impact efforts based on needs of the community within the capacity of the organization.


Lead annual fundraising efforts to support all organization activities and grants.


Lead grant writing efforts to support ongoing initiatives such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Serves as primary media spokesperson.


Coordinates or oversees public awareness and publicity of the work and activities of the organization within the community.


Represents the organization, the community and the donors in the regional, state and national United Way organizations. 


Participates in state and national meetings.


Ensures that United Way maintains an active social media presence across multiple platforms and ensures that the website is relevant and timely.


Community Partner Collaboration


Work with Community Partners to ensure that the work they are performing using United Way funds are meeting established outcomes.


Meet with Community Partners at least once a year to stay abreast of their programs, services, opportunities and challenges in order for United Way to support them and the community.
Ensure that Community Partners are in compliance with Memorandum of Agreement and  Grant Agreement.


Keep Community Partners informed of United Way, our campaign, and our expectations for a successful partnership.


Grants Management


Manage Community Partner grant process, including create and distribute application, recruit and guide Community Investment Committee panels, and act as liaison with the Board of Trustees in the award process.


Ensure Community Partners compliance with agreement, and twice annually reporting on grants progress.


Manage Emerging Needs Grant application process, including publicize, collect applications, and prepare for review by the Executive Committee.


Manage United for Racial Equity Grant (REG) process, including create application, publicize and educate community on opportunity, recruit potential applicants, recruit and REG Grantmakers, and act as liaison with the Board of Trustees in the award process.


Require final grant report form from Emerging Needs and REG grant awardees.


Collaboration with the Board of Trustees


Work closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure the organization is achieving its mission.
With the Executive Committee, manage the work of the board and keep them informed of the organization’s operational, financial, and fundraising efforts.


Bring items needing board action to the Board of Trustees and/or Finance Committee for timely inclusion on the agenda.  Meet regularly with the Board of Trustees and committees and provide updates on work activities.


Be accountable for income and expenditures in accordance with the budget and funding requirements. Make timely reports to the Board regarding financial matters.  Prepare the annual budget based on anticipated funds and determine program priorities; submit budget draft to the Board of Trustees for approval.


Work closely with the Board of Trustees and other assigned committees to ensure the successful implementation of the UWFH strategic plan.  Implement priorities and long term goals of the board.  Develop strategies and action plans to achieve goals.  Report progress in implementation to the board.


Management and Administration


Provide day to day management of the UWFH in accordance with board policy.

Maintain relationship with accounting firm to manage the organization's finances and provide direction on financial policies, accounts receivables and payables.

Hire, direct, evaluate and terminate as necessary any paid staff in accordance with UWFH’s personnel policy.

Ensure that United Way technology is fully operational and works with a vendor to ensure no interruption to services.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Nonprofit experience preferred in a senior leadership position
Fundraising experience
Supervisory and strong leadership skills
Marketing experience
Excellent communications skills (oral and written)
Proficient computer skills, especially related to spreadsheets, e-mail and word processing
Experience in working as part of a team to accomplish a goal
Active professional growth, including leadership positions in related organizations
Budget preparation skills
Strategic planning experience
Travel within the eight county service area is required on a regular basis. Other in-state and out-of-state travel may also be necessary. Mileage is reimbursed at IRS rates.

About This Role:

KFMA NE works with farm families in a 16-county area. Principal crops are corn, soybeans, alfalfa hay, and other forages.  This is also a livestock intensive area of Kansas.  Average farm size is 1,600 acres.

Responsibilities:

The foundation of the KFMA program is providing education and consultation to member farms in the area of farm business management.  KFMA Economists strive to provide cooperating farms with resources to make informed financial, production, and tax management decisions.  In order to achieve this goal, an Extension Agricultural Economist is expected to:

  1. Develop and maintain a relationship with membership of approximately 80-90 cooperating commercial farms

  2. Assist cooperating farms with development of a comprehensive and accurate accounting of the farm.  Complete records are the essential foundation of all KFMA services provided

  3. Provide KFMA members with:

  • Regular, scheduled on-farm visits each year (at times requiring extensive travel within the association)

  • An annual accrual whole-farm business analysis utilizing KFMA software to collect and process information

  • An annual economic analysis of farm enterprises

  • Benchmarks of farm performance in comparison to similar farms and/or industry standards

  • Guidance based on interpretation of whole-farm, enterprise, and benchmark analysis

  • Guidance and recommendations in estate planning, farm succession planning, and business entity structure

  1. Learn and understand federal and state income tax regulations as they apply to farm businesses.  This includes significant time spent working with members on:

  • Tax implications of farm business management decisions

  • Year-end tax planning and management

  • Preliminary income tax related work for KFMA NE members

  • Final income tax filing as an employee of Northeast Kansas Agricultural Tax Services, Inc. (with consulting leave time taken from Extension Agricultural Economist position)

  1. Collect, process, and verify financial and production information from cooperating farms to be utilized by K-State Research and Extension for research, teaching, and other Extension programs

  2. Market and promote KFMA by supporting county, area, and state Extension personnel with technical expertise in the area of farm business and farm income tax management

Participate in continuing education to expand farm income tax and farm management technical skills

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Agricultural Education, Accounting, Finance or related field and at least three years of acceptable performance in a position in one of the following areas: agricultural economics, agricultural finance, agribusiness, accounting or closely related field

Or

  • Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Accounting or related field

And

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in all college coursework

  • Minimum of 6 hours of coursework in accounting

  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals and groups

  • Evidence of solid planning, prioritization and organizational skills

  • Good understanding of production agriculture

  • Ability to effectively utilize computer technology, software and applications

  • Demonstrated expertise in understanding and communicating sound farm accounting principles and economic relationships in agriculture

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality

  • Self-discipline to work independently, and flexibility to work as part of a team

  • Ability to handle a workload that varies depending on the time of year (heavy workload required November-April)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Tax-related accounting coursework

  • Farm income-tax preparation experience

Commensurate with training and experience as negotiated by the Department of Agricultural Economics, Kansas State University; the Board of Directors of Kansas Farm Management Association, Northeast; and the applicant.
