Kaw Mission

Picture provided from http://www.kansastravel.org/kawmission.htm

The Kaw Mission, which was established in 1851, was to serve as a way to mold Kaw children into a life that would be more acceptable to the white culture. Classes were held for Kaw boys beginning in May of that year. Thomas Sears Huffaker, a 24-year-old, served as their teacher. He had prior experience working at the Shawnee Manual Labor School in present-day Kansas City. Classes were held at the Kaw Mission until 1854.

The school was closed at that time because of the excessive costs of $50.00 per year for each student. Today the Mission is maintained by the Kansas State Historical Society. Tours of the Kaw Mission are available Wednesday- Saturday from 9:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. The Mission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for students, children under 5 are admitted free. The Kaw Mission State Historic Site is located at 500 N. Mission Street, and is ADA accessible. For more information please call 620-767-5410.
